American Legacy Theatre: “See Me, Hear Me”

The goal of See Me, Hear Me is to spark a dialog between families, teachers, high school youth and anyone who works with young people in the world of education.

Cincinnati’s own American Legacy Theatre returns with their touring show, See Me, Hear Me conceived, written, and directed by Mathew David Gellin, Artistic Director of American Legacy Theatre.  See Me, Hear Me is an educational play exploring family conflict, mental health, and the power of communication.

See Me, Hear Me Themes

The goal of See Me, Hear Me is to spark a dialog between families, teachers, high school youth and anyone who works with young people in the world of education. Each performance is followed by a talkback featuring the cast as well as mental health professionals. This provides an opportunity for audiences to address themes, ask questions, and learn about resources available to them.

I had the pleasure of sitting in during a run through. During this time at an invited rehearsal, the actors were in full swing. They had great chemistry with one another and gave an entertaining (and educational) performance.

This is a great resource for educators who work with young people at the high school level. If you’re looking for a show that’s both engaging and impactful, consider having See Me, Hear Me staged at your school. It runs about an hour or so. As it is designed to be a touring show, the cast and crew can stage it across various parts of Ohio and surrounding areas.

American Legacy Theatre places an emphasis on bringing theatre to the people. In addition, they’re able to connect educators with resources and tools to address difficult conversations and provide support to struggling students.  This show is supported by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. As an HIV/AIDS advocate–and theatre fan and practitioner–I can attest to how difficult some conversations can be. I support social and emotional learning and empowering teachers and students. This team does it well.
