The Cincinnati Fringe Festival is normally a whirlwind for me, trying to see as many shows as possible by filling up every single slot in my schedule with all the great things our local and traveling artists have to offer. This year I’m off to a slow start and it’s only left me hungry for more! I got to see Esther Made Me Do It, A Migration of Crones, and seaMan during the week and am excited to head into the second weekend of Cincy Fringe 2024!

Esther Made Me Do It at Cincy Fringe 2024
This show produced by Nell Adkins and Elizabeth Sacktor (who is also the director) brings energy, comedy, and truthful storytelling together in such a beautiful way. Whether you grew up a theatre-obsessed kid like Naomi (Nell Adkins) or have a more laid-back appreciation for the arts like Ruth (Helen Sher) might determine who you relate more to. Either way, you’ll be laughing all the way as Naomi fully commits herself in preparation for the most important audition of her life with the guidance of her best friend Ruth who is sure she understands the role better.
Along the way, we get a glimpse into their lives and learn more about who they really are. We hear their stories, see their insecurities, feel how much they care about each other. Side note: the set you walk into is beautiful and captures your attention immediately! There’s so much detail put into this room and it fits the show perfectly. A Migration of Crones at Cincy Fringe 2024
This multimedia show by Performance Gallery combines video, movement, poetry, singing, and more to reveal more about aging women and their “place” in society. With a documentary style tone and complementary movement and reactions from the cast, this abstract and thoughtful show also gives us plenty of time to process the content with some comedic breaks too.
The recorded and live cast work together to redefine our definitions of crone and reinforce aging women’s inherent and societal value. Sound like your type of show? Find tickets here.
SeaMAN at Cincy Fringe at Cincy Fringe 2024
Thought about taking a riverboat tour but looking for a little more comedy and adventure? Try hiring seaMAN to be your captain on a guided tour instead! This hilarious show by 2 Sleepy Ratguys, a duo made up of Amica Hunter (returning to Cincy Fringe after winning the 2023 Cincy Fringe Artist Pick for ANATOMICA) and Bruce Costella (also a Fringe veteran, but new to Cincinnati) is an interactive journey guided by an old captain with a split personality and a lot of stories to tell.
With many interactive elements, each show is sure to be a unique experience, but come ready to laugh and engage, and you’ll have a good time. And maybe work on your knot-tying skills – they could come in handy. I recommend you get your tickets to seaMAN now before they sell out like Amica’s last show here!
