REVIEW: “Peter and the Starcatcher” at Miami University

Peter and the Starcatcher at Miami University is a wonderful reimagining of the story we know so well. With the Miami students who exude enthusiasm and a creative production team this production is a must-see.

Miami University’s production of Peter and the Starcatcher offers an energetic origin story behind the beloved character of Peter Pan. Running now through November 24 at Miami, University in Oxford, OH. 

Story and Themes

Rick Elice’s adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s novel explores the bonds of friendship, duty, and love amidst themes of grief and identity. The play examines the group of misfit orphans, led by a courageous Molly, who find strength and connection in a world filled with pirates, tyrants, and unrelenting challenges. It playfully explores the depths of greed and despair… and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love.

Performances in Peter and the Starcatcher

The cast brings an infectious energetic spirit to their roles, delivering performances that feel raw and heartfelt. The Boy (James Covarrubias) is portrayed with a moving mix of defiance and vulnerability, while Molly (Sophie Wertz) stands out as a beacon of strength and intelligence, anchoring the story’s emotional core. The comedic performances of Black Stache (Max Kaufman) and his pirate crew (including Ryan O’Malley at Smee) are equally memorable, with their exaggerated antics and sharp timing stealing the show during every appearance. Each actor demonstrates a clear understanding of their character, making the ensemble feel cohesive and dynamic.

Production Design

The vibrant sets (Gian DeFrancesco) are a visual feast, seamlessly blending elements of fantasy and reality. From lush jungle foliage to the rugged confines of pirate ships, the design immerses the audience in a richly imagined world. Clever lighting (Ben Trader) enhances the mood, creating both playful and poignant moments. This tactile and inventive staging ensures that each scene transitions smoothly, adding to the production’s fast-paced, theatrical feel.

Music and Direction

Wayne Barker’s music underscores the play’s adventurous tone, blending harmoniously with the dialogue and action. The songs are lively and engaging, reflecting the emotional highs and lows of the characters’ journeys. Directors’ (Madsie Flynn, assisted by Caroline Miller) stage concept amplifies the story’s playful essence while maintaining its deeper emotional undertones. The production team’s attention to detail in choreography, pacing, and visual storytelling is evident, making the two-hour runtime fly by.
