REVIEW: Stage Right’s “Joseph” is a Joyous, Family-Friendly Spectacle

a dazzling reimagining of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that bursts with energy, heart, and creativity

Stage Right Musical Theatre Company’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a dazzling reimagining of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that bursts with energy, heart, and creativity. Running June 6–22, 2025 at the Williamstown High School Performing Arts Center (300 Helton St., Williamstown, KY), this production is a technicolor triumph that makes this biblical tale feel brand new.

A Sunday School Lesson Brought to Life

Director and choreographer Zac Holman breathes new life into this show by setting the entire production inside a Sunday School classroom. The concept is smart and playful. The Narrator becomes a teacher guiding her students through the lesson of Joseph and his brothers. The classroom transforms into the imaginative world of ancient Egypt.

This clever staging gives the production a whimsical tone that’s accessible for families but still packed with emotional weight.

Stunning Storytelling and a Triple-Threat Cast

Annie Schneider as the Narrator is a revelation—warm, wise, and vocally commanding. With a tone reminiscent of Idina Menzel, she brings the storytelling to life with heart and precision, never overshadowing the story, only illuminating it.

Cody Combs as Joseph delivers a powerful character arc rarely seen in musical theater. Starting as a shy, awkward student tucked away in a teepee, Combs transforms into a charismatic and emotionally resonant Joseph. His performance in “Close Every Door” is heart-wrenching, and his talents in singing, dancing, and acting make him a true standout.

James Lindeman shifts seamlessly between multiple characters: aging Jacob (complete with walker and beard), smug businessman Potiphar, and a hip-swinging Pharaoh that could give Austin Butler’s Elvis a run for his money. His comedic timing is razor-sharp and his character work absolutely magnetic.

The ensemble deserves its own round of applause. Their energy is contagious, their choreography tight, and their transitions between playful students and mature roles are impressively fluid. Each performer brings something distinct and joyful to the stage, creating a fully alive world that invites the audience to play along.

Stage Right Design That Transports and Transforms

The production’s visual storytelling is enhanced by John Siedenburg’s clever set design. The classroom literally opens like a storybook, revealing the layers of the biblical world with theatrical flair. His lighting design also deserves high praise—evoking mood, memory, and momentum with subtle brilliance.

A Hidden Gem Worth the Drive
