Stephen Schwartz’s beloved musical Godspell premiered Friday evening by The Story Collective in the auditorium of Cincinnati Hills Academy. This group, led by Co-founder and artistic director Susan Jung, produces events such as fully staged productions, staged readings, creative events, classes, and workshops. This production is an exciting combination of the original Off-Broadway show, its revival in 2011 and technology. The cast is full of energy, has a great connection and sense of community which the show requires.
The Story
The opening sequence, starts with the cast entering on screen as philosophers singing their beliefs separately then all together in counterpoint. This scene is often left out of productions, so it is a treat to see it included. John the Baptist enters singing “Prepare Ye The Way of the Lord” then the show commences with songs and parables of Jesus, ending with the passion of Christ and His resurrection.
Stellar Cast
The strongest aspect of this production is the casting. There is not a weak voice on the stage. Standouts are Sam Hoyer as Jesus, and Gabe Hoyer as John the Baptist/Judas, Mackenzie King, Greg Moore, and Leah Armbruster, just to name a few. All songs are sung well. However, “On the Willows” was belted, which surprised me as the song generally calls for a gentle, peaceful sound. Beautiful acoustic guitar work by Bob Dunaway on “On the Willows.”
The Creative Team
The creative team is led by Susan Jung as Director and choreographer. With 20+ years as director and choreographer of the CHCA Theater Department is clear to see her knowledge and experience. She utilizes the ensemble well, in addition to the disciples. Music Director Mark Femia brings the best out of the songs.
The set is simple with two light boards on either side of the stage. The cast move boxes and a desk which show different levels and scenarios. The lighting design by Simon McFawn shows the emotions of the moment. In the closing scene, there could have been a more effective use of the image of Jesus on the screen. Hopefully the sound problems will not be an issue for the next two shows, one of the pitfalls of using a space that is not your own. Stage Manager Grey Vanderwoude ensures the large cast is where they need to be.
Themes and Execution
The real power of this show is the music of Stephen Schwartz and the ability of the cast to perform it well. It keeps the simplicity of the message, even while using technology, to connect it with the audience: Be kind. Be generous and understanding. Don’t hurt others; treat them the way you’d like to be treated. Those are the messages of Godspell delivered with joy by this cast of friends to show you how to build a beautiful city of light and hope.
Final Word
Godspell is a showcase for great songs and a story that has certainly stood the test of time. It is a real pleasure to watch an enthusiastic group work well together.
