LCT: Great Live Theatre Coming up for Cincinnati Area

So many live professional, semi professional and academic productions coming in January and February!

What shows are YOU looking forward to in the greater Cincinnati area this Spring?

Here’s a list of shows coming to Cincinnati area theatres during theses next two months–many are sure to sell out!

January is coming in HOT with:

  • Hell’s Kitchen, presented by Broadway in Cincinnati show at the Aronoff, January 13 – 25. Set to the rhythm of the ’90s, Hell’s Kitchen is a love story between a mother and daughter.Directed by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, with choreography by four-time Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz, and the music of Alicia Keys.
  • Little Women at the Playhouse January 17- February 15. Adapted by Lauren M. Gunderson and co-produced with Portland Center Stage. Starring local performer and director Beasley as Jo.  
  • The Buddy Holly Story at Covedale, January 22 – February 15. Sure to be a crowd pleaser.
  • A Girl in a School Uniform (Walks Into a Bar) at Falcon January 23 – February 7. By award-winning playwright Lulu Raczka, this dystopian mystery is certain to spur conversation. Schoolgirl Steph walks into the seedy, empty bar where Bell works, looking for her friend. Are any of them telling the truth?
  • The Story Collective is presenting a work about Francis of Assisi on January 24. In the works for over 30 years, Allen Pote, composer and co-founder of the Pensacola Children’s Chorus, and Tom Long, a Cincinnati-based playwright and Christian theatre director, bring the story of St. Francis to life with a staged reading. Performances are Saturday, January 24th at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church – Parish Hall.
  • Willie Wonka at Stage Right, Williamstown, Kentucky, January 30- February 8. Director Michael Yarick takes audiences of all ages into a world of pure imagination–with some morals slipped in. 
  • A Soldier’s Play at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC) is highly anticipated. It is a murder mystery by Pulitzer prize winner Charles Fuller, set on a segregated Army base in 1944. It explores race relations, self-hatred, sacrifice and service. January 30 – February 15.
  • Where We Stand by Donnetta Lavinia Grays at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, January 31 – February 22. A poetic solo piece about forgiveness, community and the cost of compassion. 
  • At Know Theatre, Serials returns Mondays in January, 15-minute episodes of five new, never-before-seen different plays by local playwrights. Every two weeks, new installments arrive. At the fifth episode finale, the audience votes on which production will be produced in its entirety.

Live Theatre to Love in February, too

In February there are many highly anticipated shows–make sure you reserve your tickets ASAP!

  • Anything Goes, a partnership between The Carnegie and CCM musical theatre – featuring Cole Porter’s memorable songs as well as a host of CCM student talent–and more!  Running February 27 to March 8, this will be a sure sell out.(Discount coupon on their website for a limited time, too!)
  • Shucked! the Tony Award-winning musical comedy, because who doesn’t need a laugh right now? Coming to the Aronoff February 10-22. 
  • Constellations by Nick Payne at Know Feb. 11-21. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. Bridget Leak directs the Regional Premiere of a beautiful and heartbreaking love story about the infinite possibilities contained in one couple’s relationship.
  • Xavier University Theatre will present the Complete Works of Wm Shakespeare (Abridged) Revised Feb 12-15. The following weekend is Trey Tatum’s Slut Shaming, a hit of the 2014 Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Directed by Bridget Leak. 
  • Rope by CCM Acting Feb 12-14. Adapted by Amy Berryman and Brant Russell. From the play by Patrick Hamilton. A mystery thriller which was the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1948 film of the same name.
  • Eurydice by NKU Feb 13-22. Sarah Ruhl’s now new classic, it is a fresh look at a timeless love story. Euridice dies on her wedding day, makes a pilgrimage to the underworld, and struggles to remember lost love. 
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical will certainly delight the kids and kids at heart at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati at the renovated Emery Theater, February 20-March 8. 
  • Contradiction of the Southern Soul is coming up at Human Race Theatre Company, Dayton on Feb 24 – March 1. Sally Mayes, an award winning actress and cabaret singer, returns to her East Texas hometown in the wake of a family tragedy to make peace with the past and accept the future.
  • The Story Collective presents Clue the Musical February 26th-28th and March 5th-7th at the Peterloon Estate. Complete with catchy songs, slapstick humor, a fast-paced plot where audience participation determines the outcome.
