REVIEW: CSC’s ‘Julius Caesar’ is a Must See

(Barry) Mulholland’s Caesar has a charming but dark energy. At times, it feels reminiscence of American Psycho. Donning a suit, he walks into this club like space with confidence like no other.

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s production of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is a must-see. This classic political tragedy explores the rise and fall of roman dictator, Julius Caesar.

This is perhaps one of the most well-known plays written by the iconic bard. From murder to political chaos, you’ll find yourself at the edge of your seat.

Amazing Performances

During the pre-show, the audience is treated to a rave like dance party with members of the ensemble dancing about the stage. At one point, Cinna the Poet (Robert Carlton Stimmel and sound designer) acts as a DJ hyping up the crowd.

Once the show starts, audiences are immediately pulled into the action as various characters on stage celebrate the return of Caesar (Barry Mulholland). Mulholland’s Caesar has a charming but dark energy. At times, it feels reminiscence of American Psycho. Donning a suit, he walks into this club like space with confidence like no other.

Candice Handy’s Cassius is immaculate. Her line delivery is sharp and biting in all the best ways. Her energy remains consistent from beginning to end. During a tense scene with Brutus (Sean Hagerty), Hagerty and Handy take their energy into the stratosphere. (Though, this can be said for the entire ensemble).

The Production Team

The entire cast works very well together thanks to Brian Isaac Phillips’ direction. The actors make great use of the playing space utilizing the various levels of the stage and audience aisles.

From a visual standpoint, Rainy Edward’s costume design helps to reimagine Julius Caesar with a mobster like feel. It doesn’t overshadow the story but instead enhances it.

Bottom Line

Overall, Cincinnati Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is a bloody good time with great performances all around. Though a classic story, much of the political unrest mirrors the political landscape of today.

For those who are Shakespeare fans and stans, this is a show you’ll want to add to your list. What makes Shakespearean theater so great is the way you can reimagine the works of the bard while retaining the original text. Cincy Shakes has most certainly succeeded in that department with this production.

I would recommend this show to anyone who finds themselves wanting to get more into the works of Shakespeare. It’s a classic show with a smart modern twist. Featuring strong performances and political drama galore, Julius Caesar, is in a league of its own.

It is quite amazing to watch the actors work the puppets’ mouth and sometimes also their eyes while having them  say their lines.  It is mesmerizing to see the wildly different types of puppets.
