Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts (NKU SOTA) presents Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields’ The Play That Goes Wrong on April 11th through the 20th. Crisply directed by Ken Jones, this British farce is comedic chaos that has the audience laughing from lights up to lights (falling) down. It is at the Carnegie Theatre, while the NKU stage is being reworked.
The play occurs within the confines of a local and poorly funded theatre company attempting to stage a murder mystery show. From malfunctioning props and set pieces to missed cues and lines, each mishap is even more absurd than the last.
Great Ensemble in NKU’s The Play That Goes Wrong
The ensemble displays remarkable comedic chops. They navigate the mayhem unfolding around them with unwavering commitment. It is evident to the audience that the cast enjoys performing their roles as much as we enjoy watching them. It is a wonderful ensemble, from the delightful ‘stage managers Annie and Tracy (Elliet Malatesta and Reagan Wildoner) to the cast of characters. Jonathan (Jathan Brisco), Sandra (Hailey Watson), Robert (Luc Vandenbroek), Chris (Bodie Moore) Max (Reagan Wildoner) and Dennis (Phenix Bills)–each member is a delight.
The production set design by Eric Barker requires special mention, as it serves as the perfect playground for the actor’s antics. A huge shout out to the Backstage Run Crew Emmarie Brewer, Kennedy Durbin, Vincent Alquizola, Laura Dejonckheere, and Josh Garner, who help move the story (and antics) along.
Overall
While The Play That Goes Wrong has no profound insights, takeaways, or themes, it makes up for it in sheer entertainment. If you loved Noises Off, you would adore The Play That Goes Wrong.
